Course Objectives:

  • Define respite care
  • Describe the role, qualities, and boundaries of a volunteer respite worker
  • Recognize the importance of coping strategies for the volunteer and caregiver
  • Properly begin a respite relationship
  • Practice good health and safety practices in respite situations
  • Demonstrate proper assistance techniques
  • Deploy effective communication (verbal and nonverbal) with the care recipient, caregiver and organization resources
  • Create a positive environment to handle ordinary and challenging respite situations
